Car registration I think it's about time I finally got around to making my license and car registration DC-friendly. Anyone have any tips? Is there really only ONE place to get your car inspected? Are some of the DMV offices better than others? Are there better days of the week to go?
Thanks! |

Seconded... It's a great feeling when you find the right track to go with the day. And today I have found the absolute perfect song......but sometimes no matter how carefully you plan your playlist, there is no right track for what awaits you.-- Definitely, Maybe. Bangalore Rocks! The terror turkey has come home to roost. The myth of a secure Bangalore was long shattered when the blasts had occurred in IISC a few years ago. However, those blasts today are hazy memory to most Bangaloreans.
Today 6 low intensity blasts have taken place at multiple locations - Adugodi, Nayandahalli, Madivala among others. Placement of bombs at widely scattered locations and the precision of timing indicates meticulous planning and extremely devious (BUT/& intelligent) minds. The city is yet to groan to a grinding halt. People surely have been thrown out of their comfortable rocking chair existence today. The blasts establish the laxity in security and lack of concern regarding safety provisions within the city. We still can not however make comments about intelligence network and its success or failure. Any negative comment at this juncture would not only be hasty but also flippant.
Will the Governments wake up? Will also the common man wake up to the new reality? That there is NOTHING called a safe place anymore. Will we become REAL citizens from now?
Bangalore, it's not just Mumbai (and Delhi and Hyderabad) that rocks.. Is it just the beginning or is it the beginning of an end? |

Wine Storage Hi! I'm moving to the D.C. area in August, and I need to take a collection of wine with me. I'd like to find a place that does professional wine storage, with attention paid to the climate (temperature and humidity). I'm not too picky about having constant access to it, as long as I can call ahead of time and pick up a case or drop one off if need be. Does anyone have any suggestions?
And in a secondary query, any good recommendation on wine merchants to frequent? I'll probably start out living on the VA side (Alexandria, Arlington, maybe Fairfax), but I'm willing to drive and/or ride the metro a decent distance for a really good wine shop.
Thanks! |

Important DC goth update OK, just in case you don't all have your thumb on the pulse of Goth DC like I do, here is the update. There's a bunch of backstory, but for your sake I'm only listing the super important points: 1. Amanda Hess wrote an article about two goth nights on L street: "“Midnight has cake,” she says. “That is the only difference.”" 2. DC Goth staple M. Kangal quits DJing forever (apparently this is a seasonal event though so I'm not too worried). More DC related: I'm on L street right now!!! Like five blocks away from both these restaurants. I should totally go over there and take pix of them during the day. In fact, yeah, I'm going to go do that right now, brb. |

Metro peeve of the morning. Cleveland Park station, 9:15-a.m. Person on the car listening to booming techno/industrial/whatever music on his mp3 player that everyone around could clearly hear. Other people seem to listen to mp3 players without sharing their music with their fellow commuters; why does one person have to provide soundtrack for the rest of the car? I clamp down on my irritation on weekends or other commute times, but morning rush hour? I do not want to be subjected to someone else's music, when chances are I won't like it. And even if I do like it, half-hearing tinny music is irritating on any level, at any time. Usually I tell myself it's only a few stops and I keep quiet. One morning, though, I'm going to snap and be "that person" who tells them to turn it down. Current Mood: bitter |

Noob Hi, I just joined today.
There is a chance I might relocate to DC very soon. I lived in Georgetown for a few months back in 2001 when I was working as an intern, but I was staying with a friend. I know I can't afford that area now.
I was wondering what everyone's opinions were on neighborhoods, and where the best place to live is. I haven't been to the city in years and don't really know what is what anymore.
I want a 2/1 for under 1500 or so a month, walking to the metro, near places I can drink at and where there is live music - I'm also a bassist looking for a new band when I relocate.
Ideas? Suggestions? |

Hi all,
I posted a few months back about my interest in moving to D.C. from Seattle to work as a new grad RN (nurse) at Children's, and I got it! Well, a long while back ago, but anywho, I had another question for you folks:
Do you recommend becoming a citizen of D.C.? I know that you guys have no representation in congress (which is completely ridiculous), but are there other benefits that make it "worth" it to become a citizen?
I'm currently a Washington state citizen and the large benefit that I have there is having access to one of the best nursing graduate programs in the country + <$15,000 tuition a year with state residency and no state income tax (although I think I need to pay income tax in D.C. because I'll work there, yes?)
Reading some posts, I can go to the pool for free? That'd be awesome :) (I'm a swimmer).
Thanks!
p.s. (and I also tried looking this up in the memories and the tags) I'm looking to live in the Columbia Heights neighborhood since it's so close to the hospital. Is this generally considered safe-ish? Can people ride their bikes without much fear of being run over? In Seattle, the cars honk at you constantly, even if you're all the way over on the side. |

Public pools and proof of residency It's hot. I want to go swimming.
Anyone know what types of proof or residency are accepted at DC public pools? Since I rent and all utilities are included I don't really have any utility bills which is the usual thing one would use. Would my voter registration card work?
There isn't much to help me on the DCPS website (it even still says that pools are closed until summer '08).
Second question - has anyone ever gone to the "Francis" pool at 25th and N and is it any good? If not, any personal recommendations on the best public pools in the District? Besides the obvious weekend problems, what is the best time to go?
Thanks in advance! |

My usually 20-minute commute took over an hour this morning because of construction on 18th and Pennsylvania. God only knows why they are doing it during rush hour, but alas. Is there an agency/website/etc. one can consult about how long it'll be there, because if it's for a while, I gotta get me a new way in.
Thanks! |

High Holidays at 6th and I: Info pls. Has anyone been to any of the High Holday Services (or any services) at Sixth and I ? I'm finding their service descriptions to be vague. What is a "traditional learners" (the Young Professional Explanatory) service? I'm a young professional but I don't need my service spelled out for me. There's the Participatory Traditional Service (all ages), which sounds...participatory and traditional. But it's "creative" and incorporates "story and song". Can anyone tell me what I'm getting myself into here? For reference I grew up conservative, and am comfortable in an all Hebrew/traditional/egalitarian environment. Not saying that's where I have to be, just where I'm comfortable. Any info would be nifty. x-posted to dc_jews Current Mood: curious |

fire wood Where does one get a small quantity of firewood this time of year? I'd like to have some for this weekend and we've exhausted everything in our small yard. I live in Bloomingdale and work in College Park, so ideally something in the close vicinity of either of those or in between would be ideal. |

Hi, friends. My Macbook crashed on Friday and according the the ~geniuses~ at the Apple store, the data on my hard drive is irretrievable. However, they said that if I shipped the little guy to some sort of professional hard drive data recovery service, they could do it for the low low price of $800(ish). Being a young 20-something in the process of starting a business, that's just not workable for me.
Do any of you have a friend or know of someone who could do it for (considerably) cheaper? There are really just two folders I need off it in the end and the rest is expendable. I would just love to not have to start my business plan all over again. I live in Alexandria, but would drive to the ends of the earth for someone who charged less and could guarantee retrieval. |

24-Hour Post Office? Are there any 24-hour post offices around DC?
edit: I guess the answer is no but the one near Union Station appears to be open until midnight. Good to know. Just for reference... there are a few post offices in the US opened 365/24/7 (even on holidays), including one in Boston, so I was just wondering if you guys had something similar. Guess not, but open til midnight is still pretty good. Thanks for the serious responses and the lovely snark ;) |

Lobster, mmm So I lost a bet and now have to cook my friend a lobster for dinner next week. Anyone have suggestions on a good place to buy them live?
I'm thinking the best place to go will be the waterfront fish market but before getting hustled down there I wanted to see if anyone has suggestions.
Thanks in advance! |
